Refining: The Art of Finishing a Piece

Many of you have found yourself struggling with how to complete a piece of Alchemical Art:  The class is almost over and you ask, “How do I make this collage item look more natural with the background?” “How do I calm down this busy page?” “How do I bring this all together?” “What do I do about this big red splotch here?”  You want to further transform this prima materia, creating a more polished cohesion or clarity.

In alchemy, there is a stage of the work called “Refining.”  This is a process of polishing and polishing until the matter turns into a mirror in which one might catch a glimpse of themself.  Similarly, a finished piece of Alchemical Art can reflect some inner aspect that is coming into view.  But it needs more polishing, more refining before it reveals its messages.

“Refining” is a technique-based class where you will learn techniques for putting the polishing touches on a work of Alchemical Art.  You will practice ways of blending the edges of collage items, you will work to unite foreground and background and learn how to use color and mark making to integrate disparate parts.  You can bring unfinished, unrefined pieces  and/or create small practice examples to be added to your Alchemist Book of Reference.  This class is especially suited for those familiar with Alchemical Art who want to refine their work.
